Minus four stars for instrument limitation in pattern

I cant see any good reason for this limitation - for example I have to decide if I have a handclap or a high tom in my 808 pattern, because I cant have both!

If I have a handclap, I cant program a groove made from high and low toms.
If I choose to have a handclap and a cowbell, there are no toms available
at all!

This makes no sense! Why cant I freely choose what sound I use for all 8 parts
in my pattern?
